Washington State Ferries Secures Vessels and Terminals Using Vigilos Software

SEATTLE, Washington, 17-August, 2004 -- Vigilos, the leading provider of Enterprise Security Management software for the physical security needs of large enterprises, announced today that the Washington State Ferries chose the Vigilos Enterprise Security Management software to manage security systems for its terminals and ferries. Vigilos will collect and manage data from access control systems, cameras, and other security devices in the ferry system's vessels and terminals to provide a higher degree of security and visibility with less need for security manpower.

Funded by a grant from the Department of Homeland Security, the Vigilos software installation, when completed, will collect and manage video from hundreds of video cameras across multiple vessels and terminals. The software will also configure, manage, and monitor access through doors and alarm points. The software automates many functions that previously required security staff. Since DHS grants provide capital but no operating funds, it's important for the ferry system to minimize the operating staff required, while instituting a high level of security.

"Maritime security is critical to our region, and I'm pleased to help the Washington State Ferries acquire the resources it needs to install state-of-the art technology that will make our ferries more secure," said Senator Patty Murray (D-Washington). "I'm also pleased that our region continues to be at the forefront of technology development, and that local companies like Vigilos are investing their resources in developing the advanced software that our country needs. Partnerships, such as this one between the Washington State Ferries and Vigilos, make our local economy stronger and our region more secure."

"Vigilos offers a trulysoftware platform," said Ned Kiley, Company Security Officer for the Washington State Ferries. " We can deploy different systems in different facilities and control them all using the Vigilos software. This gives us the broadest possible solution, and we're not locked into one hardware manufacturer. The Vigilos software rules will enable us to automate many of our security processes and this will keep staffing requirements low."

The Washington State Ferries chose Vigilos after considering many suppliers, and following a lengthy evaluation and proposal process. Vigilos met their needs across the board, including support for automated threat level escalation, in situations where the U.S. Coast Guard declares a heightened maritime security threat level. The ferry system relies on the Washington State Patrol as well as the Coast Guard for protective services, so the Vigilos software's ability to allow external entities to collaborate was a key consideration. Using Vigilos software, those external resources have access to all the information they need, including video, from any authorized user's workstation. This helps minimize investment in dedicated security operations center infrastructure.

"This is a great opportunity to install Vigilos software in a mobile environment, on the ferry system's vessels," said Geof Barker, CEO of Vigilos. "Based on the extremely robust architecture of our software, we're able to support such an environment easily. It is common in even the best wireless networks to have variable connection quality. As the vessels move around in the wireless network our software manages communications with the shore-based security systems automatically, ensuring that accurate information is available to the Washington State Ferries all of the time."

Vigilos is currently operating in a variety of installations including banks, seaports, multi-tenant commercial buildings, and petrochemical facilities, among others. Customers have declared their universal satisfaction with results including doubling output with the same staff, effectively managing security for dozens of sites from a single operations office, enabling collaboration across and outside the organization, and overall improvements in security.
